A sacred tree that stood the test of time

Kalutara Bodhiya

Historically significant and much venerated by Sri Lankans, the Kalutara Bodhiya has a long and proud history. Being one of the few hollow Buddhist stupas in the world, the temple is most revered for its Bo tree. Planted during King Devanampiyatissa’s reign in the 2nd century B.C., Kalutara Bodhiya is one of the 32 saplings of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura.
